The Department of English saw the light of the day way back in 1967 along with the foundation of the college. Late Ram Dutta, Late Prasanna Boruah, Late Basanti Chutia, Late Haren Boruah were the ones who catered to the academic needs of the Pre-University and UG students in the founding years. Their dedicated service actually prepared the foundation of the Department. In Course of time there were two important additions to the faculty calibre when it welcomed two dedicated stalwarts namely Mr Jadumoni Mahanta and Mr Pradip Konwar. Both of them had their share of unique personal traits, giving new color to the very department. In-between a hoard of contractual teachers rendered their service to the department as there happens to be only two sanctioned posts. In the year 2005 , Sankar Biswas joined the department and in the very year the Honours Module in English was unveiled. In 2012, Sadananda Borah joined the department as the other Sanctioned Faculty. Right now there are three members in the department with the third one being Shikhamoni Dutta.

Though the department has been facing dearth of sanctioned faculty as the optimal number is around 5 and in that case, still 3 additional sanctioned posts could have addressed the wholesale academic needs of the students, still the incumbent teachers since 2005 have done their level best. The first batch of students majored in English in 2008 with one being Dulal Dhar who has been serving right now as the Head Area of Operations Upper Assam of Abbott Pharmaceuticals. The department till date has produced three 1st class in English with Ashima Kalita standing 1st Class 8th in terms of Dibrugarh University Ranking in 2018. These apart other ex-students of the department have joined the mainstream as Sub-Inspector, School Teacher, Marketing Executives, Lawyers.

Coming to the infrastructural aspect of the department , it has a language lab under its jurisdiction equipped with electronic gadgets where students have incessantly received exposure to language and grammar proficiency development skills for the last couple of years. This apart smart classroom facility too has been accessed by the students of the department.

All the incumbent faculty members have their share of enhanced technological adaptation and with the conventional education facilitation system turning infeasible, the teachers have shown their committed zeal towards sustaining the tempo of educational impartment by switching on to the digital mode harnessing tools such as YOUTUBE, E-Classroom, Zoom, Webex, Google Meet and this trend has been in practice till date. Teachers are highly committed to be student-friendly helping the interested students academically, and psychologically. The incumbent teachers apart from pursuing their academic responsibility with accountability are also committed to reskilling their academic excellence through participation in seminar, workshop and conference with a clear-cut objective of facilitating the shaping of a distinctive identity of the department in the coming days.
